Born David Blaine White on April 4, 1973, in Brooklyn, New York, David Blaine is an American magician, mentalist, and endurance performer known for his revolutionary "street magic" television specials and his extreme endurance stunts.
Blaine was born to a single mother, Patrice White, a teacher of Russian Jewish ancestry. His father was William Perez, a Vietnam War veteran of half-Puerto Rican and half-Italian descent, who abandoned the family when Blaine was three years old.
When Blaine was four years old, he saw a magician performing on the subway. This sparked his lifelong interest in magic.
He was raised by his mother and attended a Montessori school in Brooklyn. The family later moved to Little Falls, New Jersey, where he attended Passaic Valley Regional High School. His stepfather was John Bukalo.
Blaine studied acting at the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York.
By age 5, Blaine had decided he wanted to become a performer. At mealtimes, his hands were constantly busy practicing card manipulations.
His mother died of ovarian cancer when Blaine was 21 (1994). He later recalled that being told she was dying was like "walking into a room blindfolded and getting smacking in the face with a baseball bat."
Despite the grief, he continued performing and making a name for himself at celebrity functions, doing magic tricks for famous people such as Mike Tyson, Al Pacino, and David Geffen.
In the early 1990s, Blaine began promoting himself energetically as a performer. He developed his trademark method of accosting strangers on the street and drawing them into his magical world, often videotaping these encounters.
In 1994, he signed with agent Jon Podell at International Creative Management. His first television special, "David Blaine: Street Magic," aired on ABC on May 19, 1997.
Penn Jillette of Penn & Teller called it "the best TV magic special ever done." Time magazine noted: "His deceptively low-key, ultracool manner leaves spectators more amazed than if he'd razzle-dazzled."
Blaine became famous for his extreme endurance performances:
On September 2, 2020, Blaine performed "Ascension," his most ambitious live stunt since 2012. Starting from Page, Arizona, he ascended to 24,900 feet (approximately 4.7 miles) suspended from 52 helium-filled weather balloons, then released the balloons and parachuted back to earth.
Blaine was inspired by the 1956 French short film Le Ballon Rouge (The Red Balloon). His mother took him to see it when he was five years old, which he said "triggered dreams where I would fly over New York City and inspired my love of levitation and magic."
The stunt was dedicated to his 9-year-old daughter, Dessa. After his previous dangerous endurance stunts frightened her, Blaine wanted to create something "inspirational rather than scary." He described the stunt as "colorful and light. Fun and magical" - different from his earlier feats focused on endurance and pushing past physical limits.
The stunt was 10 years in the making. Blaine completed 500 skydiving jumps to earn his pro skydiver rating, obtained a commercial hot air balloon pilot's license, and learned to read wind patterns. He worked with a team including skydiving expert Luke Aikins, meteorologists, balloon specialists, and aerial engineers. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) classified the event as a "research and development flight test demonstration."
Blaine took off from a desert airstrip near Page, Arizona. The balloon cluster included a fiberglass payload containing oxygen, a parachute, and cameras. As he ascended, he dropped small weights to control his ascent rate. At higher altitudes, he used oxygen supplementation and practiced breathing techniques to ward off hypoxia. About 20 minutes into the flight, he successfully donned his parachute mid-air before releasing the balloons and free-falling for approximately 30 seconds before deploying his parachute to land safely.
